Do not treat the edge as a single accessory
An asphalt roof edge may include metal drip edge, underlayment, an ice and water barrier, starter material and the first visible shingles. These components are related, but they are not synonyms. Ask the contractor to describe the proposed edge assembly rather than simply confirming that edging is included.
The eaves along the lower roof edge and the rakes along sloping sides should both be considered. A house with several additions can have multiple edge conditions, especially where roofs meet walls, gutters or older trim.
Understand the distinction in purpose
Metal drip edge helps manage water at the roof perimeter and its relationship to the fascia and gutter. Starter products form part of the first-course and edge-sealing arrangement for the shingle system. One does not replace the other.
The precise sequence, overlaps and attachment requirements depend on the selected products and applicable project requirements. Instead of prescribing a generic detail from the internet, ask which manufacturer detail the installer is following. This is particularly useful if the existing edge arrangement is being changed.
Bring gutters and fascia into the discussion
Tell the roofer whether gutter replacement or fascia work is planned. Ask whether existing components can remain without obstructing the intended roof-edge detail and which work should happen first. Leaving the coordination until the last day can create avoidable uncertainty about fit and appearance.
If different trades are responsible, identify who will resolve the connection between them. A roof edge should not become an assumption that the gutter installer will fix later. Equally, a roofing scope should not imply that all unrelated gutter or trim work is included.
Check appearance and hidden work differently
Before installation, confirm the visible edge-metal color and the desired relationship to trim. After installation, a homeowner can look from the ground for obvious discontinuities or unexpected visual changes and ask questions. A straight-looking edge, however, does not prove the concealed sequence was correct.
Request a small set of progress photographs before the first courses cover the work. Ask the contractor to identify the products and explain any unusual junction. Keep those records with the roof specification rather than trying to lift new shingles or inspect from a ladder.
For a replacement roof in Garfield or elsewhere in New Jersey, these details deserve attention even when the roof design is simple. A clear edge scope connects the shingle system to the rest of the exterior and reduces the chance that small but important components remain undefined.
Are starter strips and drip edge interchangeable?
No. They serve different roles within the perimeter assembly and must be coordinated with the other roof components.
Should edge-metal color be chosen in advance?
Yes. It is visible from the ground and should be considered with the fascia, gutters and overall exterior palette.
Can I confirm installation by lifting the first shingles?
Do not disturb the finished roof. Request progress photos and a professional explanation of the selected detail instead.
