Attic & ventilation
Why Is My Attic So Hot in Summer?
Attics can be much hotter than living spaces. Comfort problems need a review of air sealing, insulation, ducts and ventilation together.

What could be causing it?
Sun exposure heats roofing and attic air.
Blocked intake or exhaust paths can restrict ventilation.
Insulation gaps, air leakage or duct defects can affect rooms below.
Comfort needs a whole-assembly review
Roof heat, attic air and room temperature are related but are not interchangeable measurements. Duct leakage, insulation and air movement can affect the rooms below even when roof ventilation exists. Ask what evidence supports each proposed change.
What you can observe safely
Describe which rooms are uncomfortable and when. Note accessible obstructions without disturbing wiring or leaving safe attic flooring.
Use indoor or ground-level photographs. Avoid climbing onto a wet or damaged roof or entering an unsafe attic.
What determines the right repair?
Ask how intake and exhaust work together and whether ducts or air sealing need attention. An extra vent or powered fan is not automatically the right fix.
Questions worth asking
- What evidence identifies the source of the moisture or damage?
- Which materials can remain, and which need replacement?
- What is included in the written scope, and what happens if hidden damage is found?
Common follow-up question
Should I install a powered attic fan?
Not automatically. A fan needs to suit the attic and building air pathways. Review intake, air sealing and other moisture or combustion considerations with the appropriate professional.
What should the inspection document?
Ask for the affected location, photographs of the findings and a distinction between confirmed defects and areas that need further access. The report should explain how the proposed work connects to the symptom and which adjoining materials remain.
Build a useful record
Save dated photographs, the weather when the problem appeared, and earlier inspection or repair documents. These answers help you prepare; the cause still needs to be confirmed at the property.
