Shingles & storm
Will Missing Shingles Cause a Leak?
Missing shingles leave part of the roof system more exposed. A leak may not be visible immediately, but the exposed area needs assessment before another storm.

What could be causing it?
Wind can lift shingles where sealing or fastening has failed.
Aging shingles can crack or lose tabs.
A visible missing patch can coexist with less obvious lifted shingles nearby.
No indoor drip does not mean no exposure
Underlayment may temporarily keep water out of the room, while the missing covering leaves the assembly exposed. The repair decision should include nearby lifted courses and the condition of the remaining materials, not just the visible empty patch.
What you can observe safely
Photograph the roof from the ground and save the date and location of shingles found in the yard. Do not climb onto the roof to check attachment.
Use indoor or ground-level photographs. Avoid climbing onto a wet or damaged roof or entering an unsafe attic.
What determines the right repair?
A localized repair depends on surrounding shingle condition, matching materials and the ability to integrate replacements without damaging adjacent courses.
Questions worth asking
- What evidence identifies the source of the moisture or damage?
- Which materials can remain, and which need replacement?
- What is included in the written scope, and what happens if hidden damage is found?
Common follow-up question
Does one missing shingle mean a whole new roof?
Not necessarily. Local repair may be suitable when surrounding shingles and decking are sound. Widespread brittleness, repeated damage or poor integration can change that decision.
What should the inspection document?
Ask for the affected location, photographs of the findings and a distinction between confirmed defects and areas that need further access. The report should explain how the proposed work connects to the symptom and which adjoining materials remain.
Build a useful record
Save dated photographs, the weather when the problem appeared, and earlier inspection or repair documents. These answers help you prepare; the cause still needs to be confirmed at the property.
