Repair decisions
Can You Put New Shingles Over Old Shingles?
An overlay may be possible for some roofs, but existing layers, decking, material instructions and local requirements must be checked. It is not the same scope as a full tear-off.

What could be causing it?
Existing roofing can hide wet or deteriorated decking.
Extra layers change the weight and the details at roof edges and penetrations.
An uneven or damaged base can affect the new covering.
Compare scopes before comparing prices
An overlay leaves existing materials in place and limits direct inspection of the decking. A tear-off exposes more of the assembly but involves removal and disposal. Neither proposal should omit how flashing, roof edges, ventilation and hidden damage will be handled.
What you can observe safely
Gather earlier contracts to establish existing layers and known leaks. Ask the contractor to explain what can and cannot be inspected before removal.
Use indoor or ground-level photographs. Avoid climbing onto a wet or damaged roof or entering an unsafe attic.
What determines the right repair?
Compare tear-off and overlay proposals using the same flashing, decking, ventilation and warranty assumptions. Confirm applicable local requirements rather than assuming an overlay is permitted.
Questions worth asking
- What evidence identifies the source of the moisture or damage?
- Which materials can remain, and which need replacement?
- What is included in the written scope, and what happens if hidden damage is found?
Common follow-up question
Is an overlay always cheaper overall?
The initial scope may be smaller, but future removal, limitations on repairs and retained defects can change the value. Compare the whole proposed assembly and written terms.
What should the inspection document?
Ask for the affected location, photographs of the findings and a distinction between confirmed defects and areas that need further access. The report should explain how the proposed work connects to the symptom and which adjoining materials remain.
Build a useful record
Save dated photographs, the weather when the problem appeared, and earlier inspection or repair documents. These answers help you prepare; the cause still needs to be confirmed at the property.
