Repair decisions
How Long Does a Roof Replacement Take?
Installation time and the full project schedule are different. Roof size, material, access, weather and hidden repairs all affect the work plan.

What could be causing it?
Multiple slopes, steep pitches and penetrations add detailing work.
Tear-off can expose decking repairs that were not visible beforehand.
Weather, material delivery and scheduling requirements can change the start and completion dates.
Distinguish installation days from the full project
The time a crew is actively roofing excludes some delivery, preparation and follow-up steps. Complexity, weather and discovered repairs can change the sequence. Request a property-specific schedule rather than treating a general day count as a promise.
What you can observe safely
Ask for the expected installation window and the separate dates for delivery, preparation, inspections and cleanup. Explain parking restrictions and access needs early.
Use indoor or ground-level photographs. Avoid climbing onto a wet or damaged roof or entering an unsafe attic.
What determines the right repair?
Request a plan for weather protection, unexpected repairs and communication if the schedule changes. A short advertised installation time is not a guarantee for every property.
Questions worth asking
- What evidence identifies the source of the moisture or damage?
- Which materials can remain, and which need replacement?
- What is included in the written scope, and what happens if hidden damage is found?
Common follow-up question
Can I stay home during replacement?
Often homeowners do, but noise, falling-debris exclusion zones, access and pets need planning. Ask the contractor which areas must remain clear and who must be reachable for decisions.
What should the inspection document?
Ask for the affected location, photographs of the findings and a distinction between confirmed defects and areas that need further access. The report should explain how the proposed work connects to the symptom and which adjoining materials remain.
Build a useful record
Save dated photographs, the weather when the problem appeared, and earlier inspection or repair documents. These answers help you prepare; the cause still needs to be confirmed at the property.
