Edges & drainage
Why Is Water Dripping Behind My Gutters?
Water behind a gutter can be caused by overflow or a roof-edge detail. Watching where the water starts during rain is more useful than assuming the gutter needs replacement.

What could be causing it?
Leaves and debris can cause water to overflow.
Gutter pitch or downspout restrictions can prevent drainage.
Missing or poorly integrated drip edge can allow water to reach fascia behind the gutter.
Watch the route before choosing the repair
Overflow across the front, drips through a seam and water behind the gutter can involve different parts. Roof-edge details and fascia can be hidden behind the gutter, so an estimate may need to separate cleaning, adjustment and concealed wood repairs.
What you can observe safely
From the ground, note whether water spills over the front, behind the gutter or at a joint. Record which downspouts discharge during rain.
Use indoor or ground-level photographs. Avoid climbing onto a wet or damaged roof or entering an unsafe attic.
What determines the right repair?
Cleaning, gutter adjustment and roof-edge repair are different scopes. Wet or decayed fascia may need additional work once the source is confirmed.
Questions worth asking
- What evidence identifies the source of the moisture or damage?
- Which materials can remain, and which need replacement?
- What is included in the written scope, and what happens if hidden damage is found?
Common follow-up question
Will gutter cleaning always stop the drip?
Only if obstruction is the relevant cause. Cleaning will not restore missing drip edge, correct every pitch problem or repair damaged fascia. Ask which water path was identified.
What should the inspection document?
Ask for the affected location, photographs of the findings and a distinction between confirmed defects and areas that need further access. The report should explain how the proposed work connects to the symptom and which adjoining materials remain.
Build a useful record
Save dated photographs, the weather when the problem appeared, and earlier inspection or repair documents. These answers help you prepare; the cause still needs to be confirmed at the property.
