Check the plane that will carry the panels
Ask the solar installer for the proposed array location and give it to the roof inspector. Review the condition of those slopes and the nearby flashing, valleys and penetrations. Even when a leak is outside the planned panel area, the path to repair it may run through a covered slope.
Compare the likely timing of both projects
If the roof is in good condition and the only problem is a repairable detail, a repair before installation may be enough. If the panel area is approaching reroofing, ask for a quote now and a separate written estimate for removing, storing and reinstalling the panels if roof work is postponed.
Assign responsibility for the roof connections
Before either contract is signed, ask who approves attachment locations, installs or checks flashing, and handles water entry around a mount. If the roof proposal and solar proposal name different parties, get the handoff and warranty terms in writing. Ask the solar installer what structural and electrical approvals are needed for the project.
If the panels are already installed
Ask the solar provider who is authorized to disconnect and remove the equipment and how reinstallation affects the contract or warranty. Give the roofer the resulting schedule and clarify who provides temporary protection and who verifies the roof after the mounts go back in.
